Ulcerative colitis is an inflammatory bowel disease. It can cause rectal bleeding, urgency to have a bowel movement, and diarrhea. The condition can be difficult to diagnose at times, because the symptoms are similar to those seen with other intestinal disorders, including Crohn's disease. Because the condition is typically incurable, lifelong treatment is necessary.
