Uceris and Breastfeeding

Studies have shown that the active ingredient in Uceris (budesonide ER) does pass through breast milk in women who are breastfeeding. Because Uceris can cause potentially serious side effects, the manufacturer of the drug recommends that women not use this medication while nursing. However, each woman's situation is different, so talk to your healthcare provider about the risks that may apply to your individual situation.

More Information on Uceris and Breastfeeding

Studies have shown that budesonide (the active ingredient of Uceris) passes through breast milk in women. If your healthcare provider decides that it is okay for you to take Uceris while nursing, make sure to watch for any side effects or changes in your infant.

In general, very little is known about the effects that most drugs would have in breastfeeding women, as it is usually considered unethical to study medications in women who are nursing. Although this lack of information can be frustrating, it is important to understand that this is done to protect babies, who cannot consent to the risks of studies and who would not directly benefit from these studies.

Talking With Your Healthcare Provider

You should discuss breastfeeding and Uceris use with your healthcare provider. Each woman's situation is different, and you and your healthcare provider understand your situation best. After considering what you want and expect, as well as your current health situation, the two of you can make a shared decision that is right for you.
