Sulfasalazine Risks

No medication is completely free from risks, and sulfasalazine (Azulfidine®) is no exception. Although most people find it to be a safe, effective treatment for ulcerative colitis, problems are possible.

For example, the most commonly reported side effects of this drug are loss of appetite, nausea, and headache. In more serious cases, it can cause anemia, liver problems, and hallucinations. To minimize your risks with sulfasalazine, tell your healthcare provider about all other drugs you are taking and any other medical conditions you have.
