Sulfasalazine Dosing for Ulcerative Colitis That Is in Remission

Once your ulcerative colitis is in remission, your healthcare provider may decrease your sulfasalazine dosage to 2000 mg daily (split up into several smaller doses ) for adults. For children ages six and up, the dose can be reduced to 30 mg per kg of body weight (about 13.5 mg per pound) total per day, split up into four smaller doses.
 

General Information on Dosing With Sulfasalazine

Considerations for people taking sulfasalazine include the following:
 
  • The medication comes in tablet form. It is usually taken by mouth, typically three to six times per day.
     
  • Sulfasalazine can be taken with or without food. If the medicine bothers your stomach, try taking it with food.
     
  • Sulfasalazine should be taken at the same times each day to maintain an even level in your blood.
     
  • For the medication to work properly, it must be taken as prescribed. Sulfasalazine will not work if you stop taking it.
