Benefits of Sulfasalazine

If you have ulcerative colitis, you may benefit from sulfasalazine (Azulfidine®). It comes in tablet form and is typically taken three to six times a day.

Sulfasalazine belongs to a group of medications called aminosalicylates. It is thought that the medicine works by inhibiting the production of inflammatory chemicals in the lining of the colon. Sulfasalazine decreases the production of prostaglandins and leukotrienes, chemicals that lead to the inflammation caused by ulcerative colitis.

There is also a delayed-release tablet form available (Azulfidine EN-Tabs), which is approved for the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis.
