Rowasa Uses

Ulcerative colitis is a condition that can be treated with Rowasa. Uses of this medication can include the treatment of several forms of ulcerative colitis (including ulcerative proctitis and ulcerative proctosigmoiditis). Off-label Rowasa uses may include the treatment of Crohn's disease. The medicine is not approved for use in children.

An Overview of Rowasa Uses

Rowasa^® (mesalamine) is a prescription medication that is used to treat ulcerative colitis affecting the rectum and the last part of the colon (ulcerative proctitis or ulcerative proctosigmoiditis). Rowasa is a liquid form of mesalamine that is used as an enema. It is part of a group of medications known as aminosalicylates.

Ulcerative colitis is a type of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) that leads to inflammation and sores in the lining of the large intestine and rectum. It commonly causes abdominal pain (or stomach pain), diarrhea, and other symptoms (like rectal bleeding or an extreme urgency to have a bowel movement). At this time, the causes of ulcerative colitis are not fully understood. Although ulcerative colitis complications can be quite severe, there is one ulcerative colitis cure -- surgery. A combination of these options.

Because Rowasa is used as an enema, it is effective for ulcerative colitis that affects just the rectum and the last parts of the colon. This includes ulcerative proctitis (which affects just the rectum), ulcerative proctosigmoiditis (which affects the rectum and the sigmoid colon, the very end of the colon), and distal ulcerative colitis (which affects the rectum, sigmoid colon, and the descending colon).
