An Introduction to Rowasa Dosage
The dose of
Rowasa® (
mesalamine) that your healthcare provider recommends will vary depending on a number of factors, including:
- Other medical conditions you may have
- Other medications you may be currently taking.
As always, do not adjust your Rowasa dosage unless your healthcare provider specifically instructs you to do so.
Rowasa Dosing for Ulcerative Colitis or Proctitis
The recommended Rowasa dose for mild-to-moderately-active
ulcerative colitis or ulcerative proctitis is one
Rowasa enema (4 grams per 60 mL) used nightly. Be sure to ask your healthcare provider how long you should use the medication.
General Information on Dosing With Rowasa
Some considerations for people taking Rowasa include:
- Rowasa comes in a liquid form that is used as an enema. Each enema comes in its own enema bottle.
- Rowasa is used once a day, preferably at bedtime. It is best if you can retain the Rowasa liquid in your bowel for about eight hours (overnight).
- Each bottle of Rowasa suspension should be shaken well just before use.
- Rowasa will work best if your bowel is empty before each use.
- Be sure your healthcare provider explains exactly how to use the Rowasa enema. Be aware that the Rowasa liquid will stain fabrics, flooring, painted surfaces, marble, granite, vinyl, and enamel.
- If you are unsure about anything related to your dosage or Rowasa dosing in general, please talk with your healthcare provider, nurse, or pharmacist.
