Pentasa for Ulcerative Colitis

Available by prescription only, Pentasa® (mesalamine) is a drug used to reduce inflammation caused by ulcerative colitis. This is a type of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) that commonly causes symptoms like diarrhea, abdominal pain (stomach pain), or rectal bleeding.

Pentasa is approved to treat mild-to-moderately active cases of this condition. As a type of aminosalicylate, this medication works by inhibiting the production of inflammatory chemicals in the lining of the colon.

Pentasa comes in capsule form and is approved only for use in adults. The capsules are controlled-release, meaning they dissolve slowly over time. This allows the medication to be released throughout the gastrointestinal tract.
