Infliximab Safety

Infliximab (Remicade®) is a medication used to treat several inflammatory conditions that affect the joints, skin, or digestive system. Although it is generally a safe medication, there are certain concerns to be aware of before beginning treatment with it.

It's important to understand that certain problems can develop in people taking infliximab. For example, this medication can increase your risk of developing:

  • Infections
  • Lymphoma
  • Liver problems.

Also, clinical studies have shown that people with congestive heart failure who took medications like infliximab had an increased risk of death. In addition, worsening of heart failure and new cases of heart failure in people that did not already have it have been reported in people taking similar medications.

Other safety issues with infliximab include possible side effects, such as:

  • Infections
  • Abdominal (stomach) pain
  • Heartburn or indigestion.
