Infliximab dosing is administered intravenously (by IV). You can receive your infusions at your healthcare provider's office or at an infusion center. The infliximab dosing guidelines that your healthcare provider will follow depend on factors such as your age and weight, the medical condition you are being treated for, existing medical conditions, and other medications you are taking -- both prescription and over-the-counter.
An Overview of Infliximab Dosing
The dose of
infliximab (
Remicade®) that your healthcare provider recommends will vary, depending on a number of factors, including:
- Your age and weight
- The medical condition being treated
- Other medical conditions you may have
- Other medications you may currently be taking.
Infliximab Dosing for Psoriatic Arthritis, Plaque Psoriasis, and Ulcerative Colitis
The recommended infliximab dose for these conditions in adults is infliximab 5 mg per kg (about 2.3 mg per pound) given intravenously (by IV). Your next two doses should be given two and six weeks after the first dose. After that, the doses should be given every eight weeks.
Infliximab Dosing for Ankylosing Spondylitis
The recommended dose of infliximab for
ankylosing spondylitis is infliximab 5 mg per kg (about 2.3 mg per pound) given intravenously (by IV). Your next two doses should be given two and six weeks after the first dose. After that, the doses should be given every six weeks.
Infliximab Dosing for Crohn's Disease
When treating
Crohn's disease, the recommended dose is infliximab 5 mg per kg (about 2.3 mg per pound) given intravenously (by IV). Your next two infliximab doses should be given two and six weeks after the first dose. After that, infliximab dosing should be given every eight weeks. If the medication seems to lose its effectiveness in adults who have initially responded well to it, the dose can be increased up to infliximab 10 mg per kg (about 4.5 mg per pound) every eight weeks. However, the maximum dose of infliximab for people with moderate to severe
heart failure (for any use) is 5 mg per kg (2.3 mg per pound) per dose.
