Generic Delzicol

There is currently a patent in place that prevents companies from making a generic Delzicol (mesalamine) product. However, this may change once the patent expires in July 2013. After the patent expires, a generic Delzicol product might become available. Although mesalamine is often referred to as the generic name for Delzicol, it is not a generic version of it.

Can I Buy Generic Delzicol?

Delzicol® (mesalamine) is a prescription medication licensed to treat ulcerative colitis. It is part of a group of medications known as aminosalicylates. It comes in the form of a capsule. It is a replacement for Asacol® 400 mg tablets, which are no longer available.

Delzicol is manufactured by Warner Chilcott (US), LLC, and is currently protected by a patent that prevents any generic Delzicol from being manufactured.

When Will a Generic Version Be Available?

The patent for Delzicol is set to expire in July 2013. This is the earliest possible date that a generic version could become available.

However, other circumstances could come up to delay or shorten this exclusivity period. This could include things such as lawsuits or other patents for new Delzicol uses. Once the patents expire, there may be several companies that will begin manufacturing a generic Delzicol drug.

Is Mesalamine a Generic Delzicol?

No -- mesalamine is the active ingredient in Delzicol (and several other medicines), not a generic version of it. What can be confusing is that the active ingredient of a drug is often referred to as the "generic name." The generic name is different from a generic version of a medicine.

In order for there to be a generic version of a medicine, the original medicine must have gone off-patent, and another company besides the original manufacturer would make the product.
