Delzicol Dosage

Your healthcare provider will determine an appropriate dosage of Delzicol based on the severity of your condition, other medications you are taking, and various other factors. The usual starting amount to treat ulcerative colitis is two Delzicol 400 mg capsules three times daily for six weeks. Once the condition is in remission, your dosage will be reduced.


An Introduction to Dosing With Delzicol

The dose of Delzicol® (mesalamine) your healthcare provider recommends will vary, depending on a number of factors, including:
  • The severity of your condition
  • Other medical conditions you may have
  • Other medications you are taking.
As always, do not adjust your dosage unless your healthcare provider specifically tells you to do so.

What Is the Recommended Delzicol Dosage for Active Ulcerative Colitis?

The recommended starting dose for mild-to-moderately active ulcerative colitis is two Delzicol 400 mg capsules three times daily (for a total of 2400 mg or 2.4 grams daily) for six weeks.

Delzicol Dose for Ulcerative Colitis Remission

Once your ulcerative colitis is in remission, your healthcare provider may decrease your dose to Delzicol 1600 mg (four capsules) daily in divided doses, such as one capsule four times daily or two capsules twice daily.

General Information on Taking Delzicol

Some considerations to keep in mind during treatment with Delzicol include the following:
  • The medication comes in capsule form. It is usually taken by mouth three times daily.
  • You should take this medication on an empty stomach, at least one hour before or two hours after a meal.
  • Be sure to swallow the capsules whole.
  • Delzicol should be taken at the same times each day to maintain an even level in your blood.
  • For the medication to work properly, it must be taken as prescribed. Delzicol will not work if you stop taking it.
