Ulcerative Colitis Information

Also known as colitis or proctitis, ulcerative colitis is a disease that can cause rectal bleeding, urgency to have a bowel movement, diarrhea, and other symptoms. Not everyone will experience the same type and severity of symptoms. Factors that play a role in a person's symptoms include age, how much of the digestive tract is affected, and whether complications occur.
 
Surgery to remove the colon and rectum is the only cure for this inflammatory bowel disease. If a person's symptoms are mild, surgery may not be necessary, and other treatment options may be used to help manage symptoms. These include:
