Pentasa Medication Information

Available by prescription only, Pentasa® (mesalamine) is a medication used to treat ulcerative colitis. This drug is not appropriate for everyone; your healthcare provider needs complete information on your medical history and what medications you are taking before prescribing Pentasa.

Although many people do not have any problems while taking this medication, Pentasa can cause side effects, such as nausea and diarrhea. Fortunately, if negative reactions do occur, they tend to be minor and easily treated.

Pentasa comes in capsule form and is typically taken four times a day. The controlled-release capsules dissolve slowly over time, which allows the medication to be released throughout the gastrointestinal tract.
