Problems With Colazal

In clinical studies, some of the reported side effects of Colazal® (balsalazide disodium) included abdominal pain (stomach pain), joint pain, and diarrhea. Does that mean you should expect problems while taking Colazal? An important thing to keep in mind is that in these studies, even the most commonly reported side effect (abdominal pain) was reported in up to 6 percent of people taking it. Thus, most people were able to tolerate the drug well.

Serious side effects are less common, but they do occur. Notify your healthcare provider immediately if you are taking Colazal and develop any of these potentially serious problems:

  • Decreased urination
  • Signs of liver problems (such as dark urine or yellow skin)
  • Worsening of your ulcerative colitis symptoms.
