Colazal Risks

People with ulcerative colitis may be prescribed Colazal® (balsalazide disodium) to treat this condition. Although most people tolerate it well, there are certain risks with Colazal to be aware of prior to beginning treatment.

For example, you should be aware that this medication can cause side effects, such as stomach pain, diarrhea, gas, and joint pain. In addition, Colazal presents a greater risk of problems when used by people with certain other medical conditions, such as pyloric stenosis and kidney disease.

In order to minimize your risk of problems and ensure a safe treatment process, tell your healthcare provider about any other medical conditions you have and any other medications you are taking, including nonprescription drugs, vitamins, and supplements.
