Canasa Side Effects

Rectal pain, dizziness, and rash are some of the most common Canasa side effects. Side effects of the medication are generally minor and, in most cases, do not require medical attention. Some side effects of Canasa, however, are serious and should be reported to your healthcare provider right away, including decreased urination, worsening of ulcerative proctitis symptoms, an allergic reaction, or signs of pancreatitis.

As with any medicine, side effects are possible with Canasa^® (mesalamine); however, not everyone who uses the medication will experience side effects. In fact, most people tolerate it quite well. If side effects do occur, in most cases, they are minor and either require no treatment or can easily be treated by you or your healthcare provider.

Common Canasa Side Effects

Canasa has been studied thoroughly in clinical trials, in which a group of people taking the drug have side effects documented and compared to another group not taking the medicine. This way, it is possible to see what side effects occur, how often they appear, and how they compare to the group not taking the medicine.

In these studies, the most common Canasa side effects included:

Dizziness -- up to 3 percent of people
Rectal pain -- up to 1.8 percent
Fever -- up to 1.2 percent
Rash -- up to 1.2 percent
Acne -- up to 1.2 percent.
