How Does Azulfidine Work?

Ulcerative colitis can often be successfully managed with the drug Azulfidine® (sulfasalazine). The medication comes in tablet form and is taken by mouth anywhere from three to six times a day, depending on various factors.

But how does Azulfidine work? This prescription medicine inhibits the production of certain chemicals in the lining of the colon. These chemicals are responsible for the inflammation that is characteristic of ulcerative colitis; therefore, people who take Azulfidine often see a reduction in their ulcerative colitis symptoms.
