Azulfidine Drug Interactions

When medications like warfarin, folic acid, or digoxin are taken with Azulfidine, drug interactions may occur. These interactions can decrease the absorption of the medicines in your blood, which may reduce the drugs' effectiveness. If Azulfidine drug interactions are a concern, your healthcare provider may adjust your dosages or monitor you more closely.

 

Azulfidine Drug Interactions: An Overview

Azulfidine® (sulfasalazine) can potentially interact with a few other medicines. Some of the medicines that may lead to Azulfidine drug interactions include:
 
  • Digoxin (Digitek®, Lanoxin®)
  • Folic acid
  • Warfarin (Coumadin®, Jantoven®).
     

Azulfidine Interactions Explained

The following sections explain in detail the potentially negative interactions that can occur when Azulfidine is combined with any of the drugs listed above.
 
Digoxin
Azulfidine may decrease the absorption of digoxin into your body, perhaps making it less effective. Your healthcare provider should monitor the level of digoxin in your blood, especially when you are starting or stopping Azulfidine.
 
Folic Acid
Azulfidine may decrease the absorption of folic acid into your body. Ask your healthcare provider about taking folic acid supplements, especially if you are a woman of childbearing age.
 
Warfarin
Azulfidine may interact with warfarin, perhaps affecting how the medication is absorbed or decreasing its effectiveness. Your healthcare provider should monitor you more closely and adjust your warfarin dosage as necessary.
