Azulfidine® (
sulfasalazine) is a drug commonly used in the treatment of
ulcerative colitis. It comes in the form of tablets, and only one strength is available: 500 mg. The exact amount your healthcare provider recommends will depend on several different factors, such as your age and weight, and the severity of your ulcerative colitis.
For example, in adults, the recommended starting dose for mild-to-moderately active cases of ulcerative colitis is 3000 to 4000 mg total per day. This could be divided into 500-mg doses of Azulfidine and taken several hours apart throughout the day.
The most important things to keep in mind when taking Azulfidine tablets are to follow your healthcare provider's directions and to not adjust the dose or stop treatment without talking to your healthcare provider first.
