Who Should Not Take Azathioprine?

You should not take azathioprine if you:
 
  • Are allergic to Imuran, azathioprine, or any of the inactive ingredients used in making azathioprine. Your healthcare provider or pharmacist has a list of the inactive ingredients.
     
  • Are a pregnant woman with rheumatoid arthritis.
     
  • Have taken certain chemotherapy medications, such as cyclophosphamide (Cytoxan®) or chlorambucil (Leukeran®) in the past to treat rheumatoid arthritis, due to an increased risk of cancers. Ask your healthcare provider about this, however, as it may be okay to take azathioprine in certain situations.
