Not everyone with
ulcerative colitis will be prescribed the same dosage of
Asacol® (
mesalamine). Although Asacol tablets come in only one strength (400 mg), the number of tablets you will need to take depends on how severe your symptoms are, whether you are taking any other medications, and whether you have certain other medical conditions.
However, there are some general dosing guidelines for this drug. For example, if you have a mild or moderately active case of ulcerative colitis, you will likely start at 2400 mg of Asacol a day, broken into three doses of 400 mg each. A lower amount may be appropriate if your ulcerative colitis is in remission. As always, do not adjust your dosage unless your healthcare provider specifically tells you to do so.
