Asacol HD Uses
Asacol HD belongs to a group of medications called aminosalicylates. It is thought to work by inhibiting the production of inflammatory chemicals in the lining of the colon. Asacol HD decreases the production of prostaglandins and leukotrienes, chemicals that lead to the inflammation of ulcerative colitis.
Asacol HD tablets have a special delayed-release coating. The coating prevents the tablets from dissolving until they reach the very end of the small intestine.
Asacol HD has not been approved for ulcerative colitis in children. Be sure to talk with your healthcare provider about the risks and benefits of using Asacol HD for children.
On occasion, your healthcare provider may recommend Asacol HD for treating something other than for moderately active ulcerative colitis. This is called an "off-label" use. Using Asacol HD for longer than six weeks and using it to maintain remission of ulcerative colitis (instead of just treating the active disease) are considered to be off-label uses of the drug.
